Are we finally ready to embrace TVs as smart home hub?

About two weeks ago, I attended the Google TV Summit APAC, where Google outlined its vision for the evolving role of TVs in smart homes.
As mentioned in a previous post, the television, present in virtually every household, is uniquely positioned to serve as the hub of a smart home. With its existing features and functionalities, the modern Smart TV is equipped to seamlessly integrate and control IoT devices, making it a convenient, affordable, and user-friendly solution for home automation.
Google highlighted how televisions are transforming from simple entertainment devices into pivotal hubs for connected living. This shift is being driven by the integration of IoT functionality, universal interoperability standards like Matter and Thread, and innovations in the Android TV platform. Google is positioning TVs as central interfaces for managing connected devices, creating seamless interactions across ecosystems.
Key Points from Google’s Vision:
- Technological Integration:
Modern Smart TVs come equipped with features like live streaming from cameras, audio integration, voice control, apps, internet connectivity, and Bluetooth. They can also function as universal control systems for managing thermostats, lighting, and security systems, making them a comprehensive solution for smart home automation. - Universal Standards:
Adopting standards like Matter and Thread ensures TVs can connect with a diverse range of IoT devices, fostering interoperability regardless of brand. - Industry Momentum:
Companies like Samsung and LG are aligning with this vision, heavily investing in smart home technologies that anchor the TV as a core component of connected ecosystems.
Are we finally ready to embrace TVs as smart home hubs?
The idea isn’t new—partnerships like the Samsung-Legrand collaboration in 2015 showcased TVs as central controllers in home automation. Similarly, Marriott’s projects illustrated their potential in connected hotel rooms. Today’s Smart TVs blend entertainment, home management, and IoT control in a user-friendly device, making them an appealing choice for connected living. With clear vision and groundwork laid, the challenge is accelerating market-ready solutions.
